The Supreme Court in Delaware has ruled that a woman’s decision to adopt her ex-husband does not entitle her family to a greater share of her father’s estate, reports the International Business Times.
Susan Gore, along with her mother and four siblings, is named as a beneficiary to the estate of her father, millionaire Wilbert Gore, who established the Gore Tex company.
Susan and her ex-husband, Jan Otto, had three children, while her siblings all had four children each. Under the terms of the will, this meant that her children would inherit fewer shares in the business.
According the the court decision, Susan therefore decided to adopt her ex-husband as her son, to give herself four children and even out the distribution of shares.
However, according to the International Business Times, the court has ruled that this ‘unconventional adoption’ does not entitle Jan Otto to a share of the estate.
